A friend was celebrating her daughter’s 1st birthday. Her vision was to create a garden full of cupcakes that reflected her color scheme. She had an array of pastel colors which included pale pink, violet, and white. She enlisted me to create flowers on top of her cupcakes. The cupcakes and all the other details of this party were so special!

Create flowers on top of cupcakes by using tinted buttercream in shades of purple, pink, white, and green. My friend purchased a cake from our local bakery and had them frost it in a light pink frosting. A gold glittery One was found on Etsy to decorate the cake, along with some food grade flowers. Click here to see the gold letters on Etsy. As an alternative, you could cut the gold letters on your Cricut Explore 2. Following are more details of this darling party.
We loved with this burlap banner with pink and gold letters. You can find this banner on Etsy here.
This pale pink tutu is available on Etsy here. I also found a similar headband for babies on Etsy here.
You can find these glittery gold ONE from Etsy here. A similar month tracker can be found on Etsy here.
My friend had this basket for blankets and adorned with the balloon, and banner found on Etsy here. Isn’t the little one-year-old onesie SO cute?? You can find the onesie on Etsy here. My friend purchased a large pink balloon from Party City. She was able to keep the balloon inflated and floating for almost a week by filling the balloon with hi-float and helium! Hi-float is available at Party City.
A close up of these cupcake beauties, and you can learn how to create these flowers. If you’d like further instruction on how to make them, please reference this class on Craftsy here called Fresh Arrangements Buttercream and Beyond. In this video series you get to learn how to make these fabulous cupcake bouquets like the one below! Can you imagine getting these cupcakes as a gift?
To save on time, we purchased the cupcakes and buttercream and then frosted the cupcakes ourselves.
The easiest flower to frost is the hydrangea. Cut a parchment circle if you’d like to practice your piping first on something besides the cupcake. The good thing about buttercream on cupcakes is that if you make a mistake on your cupcake, you can still scoop it up and start over!
To start, you will need to tint the frosting a very light violet, light violet, and a regular violet shade like below. Use a toothpick to add the colors a little bit at a time (you can always add more but you cannot take it away).
Mix the frosting well so that all the color mixes in.
Paint the inside of the piping bag with the darkest shade of purple. You will need to paint this frosting all around the sides. Please refer to this cupcake post to see how to fit a tip into a piping bag, cut the bag, and fill a bag.
Now paint the lighter shade of violet around the sides of the darker violet all around the sides. Place the lightest shade of purple in the middle and maybe even a little bit of white for a highlight.
Squeeze the frosting down and then twist the bag. Fit the bag with a number 224 Wilton tip. Hold the bag upright and squeeze and release to create these stars in top of the cupcake.
Continue going all around the cupcake in a circle. Start another circle within the bigger circle until you get to the center. If you see any bare spots, squeeze another star on top. To make the hydrangea more realistic, do more than one layer of stars towards the center.
On to the peony… First, pipe one large mound of pink frosting for the base of the flower. From this point you can either make a rose or a peony. For the rose or the peony, start with a mound of your pink frosting using the 104 number tip.
Now make yellow strands in the center. To create the right color of yellow, I used mostly yellow with a touch of orange. I also added a little bit of powdered sugar because my buttercream frosting was on the soft side. After you do the yellow center of the flower, then the procedure is similar to making the rose.
Switch to your yellow color and squeeze and pull strands of yellow frosting for the inside of the peony. You can use a number 3 tip for these yellow strands.
With your piping bag at a 45 degree angle and the tip wider end down, pipe a circle to make the center of the bud.
Continue making petals with the wider end down and make three petals outside of the bud. From here, you’re going to do five petals around until you get to edge of the cupcake. A video is probably the best for learning this flower. This is a great free video for the rose. For more detailed instruction, you can enroll in this class from Craftsy here called Fresh Arrangements Buttercream and Beyond.
I used the same tip for my white flower as my rose flower. I did one layer of petals around in one circle and then did a second layer in the center of the first circle. At a 20-30 degree angle place the wider end of the tip right on the cupcake and squeeze, stop and pull to make these petals. A video is a great way to illustrate how to make these petals. I like this free video from Craftsy here.
Mix a realistic green color for the inside of the white flower and petals for the other flowers. Use mostly green, a little bit of yellow and a tiny bit of red. Place tiny dots of green inside of the white flower with a small round tip like the Wilton 2 tip. Make leaves with a Wilton 68 tip by squeezing and pulling like before.
