I love a good party, but one year, I just felt a bit tired and overwhelmed. I’m sure that many moms can relate to this feeling, right? You still have your creative juices flowing, but this year the kids really kept me busy. As a family, we decided we were going to do something different for Evan’s birthday. We packed our bags and headed to Universal for my older son, Evan!

Hands down, my favorite hotel at Universal Studios is Loews Portofino Bay Hotel! This lovely hotel transforms you to the seaside village of Portofino, Italy… YES please! In the evening, opera singers will serenade you on the balcony of the hotel, and you can also find gelato! If you decide to leave this lovely setting, a boat will take you to the Universal parks. One HUGE perk of staying at this hotel is that you are granted free Express Passes for ALL the rides at Universal for two full days.
We discovered that the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel offered a Minion family suite!! This was a two-bedroom suite that had an elegant bedroom for the adults and a super fun Minion room for the kids. This is the entrance to the kids’ Minion room. When my son first saw the door he thought it was a janitor’s closet… How darling is that? We kept this Minion suite a secret to build upon the surprise and excitement of the day.
Please enter our Minion room! I just can’t take how amazing these beds are!! Look how pristine everything looks before the kids arrive.
My son was dying to buy a red villain chair after staying in this suite! We had a lovely view of the bay out of both windows.
Wesley and Evan enter their Minion room! That is pure joy and excitement on their faces.
The kids have invaded! Of course they love the beds too.
Mom, we don’t want to leave!
I went shopping before the trip to find all the Minion merchandise! I got Minion pjs for both of the kids to wear in their Minion room, Minion shirts for the next day at the park, and even Minion undies. The kids enjoyed snuggling up with their Minion plush at night as well. For the birthday boy, I found a Minion wallet and filled it with money to spend the next day at the park.
Not just any snacks would do for this kind of Minion weekend. We created Minion bananas, Minion Twinkies and Minion cookies. A carefully crafted note from the Minions was left to add to the fun.
Easily Create these Minion bananas by downloading a FREE template and instructions here.
Twinkies are not usually on my shopping list, but these were so irresistible that I had to buy them. You can find the FREE download for these Minion Twinkies here.
Minion cookies are made by dipping Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies in blue melted chocolate. Reserve the chocolate you don’t use to serve as “glue.” Find pre-made Minion eyes on Amazon and attach them on with your reserved melted chocolate.
The Cake
We wanted to recreate the iconic Universal fountain that you see when you are about to enter Universal Studios. To make a sphere shaped cake, you will need two half sphere cake pans. The bottom of the fountain is created by using a very large cake pan. A smaller cake pan holds up the cake board and ball cake. We even put in dry ice in the bottom of the very large cake pan to mimic the fog you see in the real fountain.
At the time of this party, my son Evan was obsessed with Universal Studios. We printed out pictures of all of his favorite rides and used double sided tape to tape them to the bottom of the pan.
Evan enjoying his goodies in his room in his Minion pjs. We are about to head out and enjoy Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. One tip from our family to yours, make sure you try the FROZEN Butterbeer when you visit the Harry Potter land… yummy!
Your boys look like they were really loving this! I love the way you tied it all together. Some years we have super amazing parties and some years we have a cake and presents with Granny. LOL Great post!
Thanks! We really enjoy creating the parties for the boys!
I was not aware there was a Minion themed hotel room, that is cool!
We are lucky to have really fun hotels here in Orlando, FL!
How cool is that hotel! I would love to have a little party there myself.
Thanks! I have to admit that we did it for the kids but I really enjoyed it too!!
This looks like such a fun party!! How amazing!! Love Minions!
Thanks! My boys love the Minions too.
How cool! I never thought about packing up and going somewhere for my girls birthdays.
I love a good party but it can be a LOT of work. It was really fun to have a mini vacation instead of a party for one year.
absolutely adorable!! Those ideas are perfect…and not over the top! It looks like the kids had fun too!
Thanks so much! Yes the kids had fun and so did mommy :)!
