It’s lime season at the Lam household which means lots of lime-aide, freshly squeezed lime to enhance our food, and yes, even limes in my flower arrangements! We have an AMAZING cocktail tree in the backyard. This tree has grafts of many citrus fruits in a single tree so you do not get a huge amount of each citrus when the season arrives. We get Meyer lemons, grapefruits, limes, and mandarin oranges all in one tree! Cool, right? If you live in a zone where you can grow citrus, I highly recommend this tree (I would say zone 7 or lower). Now for the flower arrangement; you could create this arrangement with Meyer lemons, fruits that are a little more cold hardy (would do ok in zone 8).

Have you ever seen flower arrangements with filled vases and wondered how people make them? I have seen everything in the vases from fruit to candy. Following are instructions about how they are done.
Find two clear glass vases that are similar in height (my bigger vase is slightly taller). The most important thing is that the vases have different diameters. The taller vase needs to have a larger diameter than your smaller vase. Depending on what you decide to put in your vase, you can have a smaller or wider gap. For limes, I plan to cut them about 1/8 inch, so that is the amount of gap I will need between the vases.
Here are our limes picked straight from our cocktail tree. You will need about three limes for this project.
Cut the limes in thin 1/8 inch slices. You will want to discard the ends of the limes (or thrown them in your ice water). Using a good knife is crucial to cutting nice straight thin slices (I will link my favorite below).
Place the smaller vase inside the larger vase and start adding the lime slices. You will want to do one full row before you start the next row.
Now all the rows are completed, and I can start adding beautiful flowers. I like to keep my flower colors on the simple side to make the arrangement more elegant looking. For this arrangement, I have chosen all whites and greens which makes a lovely combination. Another beautiful combination is bright greens and pinks. An additional idea is to keep it very simple and stay with one color choice.
Can you believe these flowers were purchased very inexpensively at Trader Joe’s? I don’t believe that most people would think grocery store flowers when they saw the finished bouquet. I learned how to make this bouquet and many others from one of my favorite Craftsy classes called The Flower Kitchen you can view here. I stripped all the leaves from the stems and cut them 1.5 times the height of the vase. I left a couple of leaves on the hydrangea so that there would be a little bit of greenery. Just make sure that none of the leaves are under water or your water will grow bacteria quickly. My favorite shears for cutting flowers and gardening are linked below.
What a cool tree! The flower vase looks beautiful-i will have to try this out in the summer when I can pick flowers from the backyard again.
Thanks, you must have a wonderful garden if you can pick flowers from it for arrangements!
I could’ve used this yesterday! You should’ve seen me looking like a madwoman trying to get dried orange slices to stand up in my vase!
Awe, the two vases really help!
OMG it looks beautiful and hydrangeas are my favourite flowers. Love it
Thanks! Hydrangeas are my favorite as well.
I love the way it looks and I bet it smells lovely too!
Thanks! I love the smell of flowers and citrus!
This arrangement is so pretty! I love the idea of using fruit. I want to try to recreate this exact look. I love it.
Admiring the dedication you put into your blog and in depth information you present. It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same unwanted rehashed material. Excellent read! I’ve saved your site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.
Thanks so much!
